As the government shutdown drags into its second month, the strain is spreading far beyond Washington, D.C. With federal employees still working without pay and millions set to lose Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on November 1, these San Antonio restaurants are stepping up to offer support — and a warm meal — to those struggling to make ends meet.
The Baked Bird
The Babcock Road coffeehouse has been accepting donations of eggs and nonperishable foods in preparation for distribution from 8 am-4 pm on November 1.
Beer Bellyz BBQ
This Converse-based pop-up is offering a $12 buy-one-get-one deal until the end of the shutdown. Guests can pick from brisket nachos topped with pico de gallo and barbecue sauce or creamy brisket mac ‘n’ cheese.
Chunky’s Burgers
The Callaghan Road burger joint is offering a 50 percent discount to all government employees affected by the shutdown.
Comfort Cafe
This recovery-minded restaurant has a pay-what-you-can model with a suggested donation of $15. Extra funds above that amount are added to the Pay it Forward Board, allowing individuals and families in need to receive a warm meal through the generosity of others.
Cuba 1918
The South Side restaurant’s $1 breakfast tacos are a surefire way to stretch the budget. The meals are available 8-11 am, Tuesdays through Saturdays, for pick-up or dine-in.
Everybody Loves Raymonds
On November 5, the popular burger joint will be giving out 100 free chicken dinner plates to SNAP recipients at each of their two locations, 18600 Pleasanton Rd, and 2118 I-35 N Frontage Rd. The restaurant says it will also soon introduce a budget-minded kids’ meal special available until benefits are no longer being withheld.
Nick’s Tacos
The faith-based business lets San Antonians pay it forward with the Wall of Hope. Customers can purchase meal tickets that neighbors in need can redeem for a free meal, no questions asked. The restaurant also regularly partners with churches and community organizations to feed unhoused neighbors.
Out Of The Way Café
The Lakehills eatery is helping feed 300 Bandera County kids each week through its nonprofit arm, Out of the Way Community Corp. It also maintains a community pantry with nonperishable food items, toiletries, and household essentials.
Papa Murphy’s Pizza New Braunfels
The locally owned franchise is giving food-insecure kids free make-and-bake Mini Murph pizzas while supplies last.
T-Dawg Smoke BBQ
On November 5, the Kirby food stand will be passing out 300 complimentary barbecue plates to those in need at the intersection of Frio and Salinas Streets. Message the business for the exact hours.
Other resources
The San Antonio Food Bank, the largest area food bank serving 29 counties, is gearing up for high demand as the shutdown continues, massive layoffs continue to hit the Alamo City, and the holiday season approaches. Those with the means can make a cash donation here.
