Joe Montana knows a thing or two about great quarterback play.

After all, the Hall of Famer is a four-time Super Bowl champion and he took home MVP honors in three of those games.

So it was high praise Tuesday when Montana, appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, named Justin Herbert as one of the quarterbacks he’d start an NFL team with.

Montana was asked to play the role of hypothetical general manager and initially picked Josh Allen and Joe Burrow.

He then saved Herbert for his third and final pick.

“I like the guy with the Chargers,” Montana said. “Justin Herbert, I think they’ve kind of gone by the wayside … but I like the way [he plays].”

Herbert has thrown for 21,093 yards and 137 touchdowns in his first five seasons in the league, and has set an NFL record for most completions (1,945) in a player’s first five seasons.

His completion total is also an NFL record among quarterbacks prior to turning 27 years old.

Herbert and the Chargers will open the 2025 season in Brazil against the Chiefs on Friday. Kickoff is at 5 p.m. (PT).
