Syracuse, N.Y. — After a few more days of 90 degrees — or close to it — the heat should break in Upstate New York just in time for the opening of the New York State Fair.

The overall trend for the fair’s first week is slightly below normal temperatures and not much rain, according to the National Weather Service’s long-range forecasting arm, the Climate Prediction Center.

That doesn’t mean there can’t be hot days during that first week, but that the average temperature for the week is likely to be lower than the normal highs of about 80.

Today through Sunday, highs will be in the upper 80s or low 90s in Syracuse, with plenty of humidity to make it feel even hotter.

But a cold front from the west and a longer-term shift of the jet stream should bring cooler temperatures to the fair’s first week, forecasters say.

By Wednesday, the opening day of the fair, the high temperature in Syracuse is expected to be 77 degrees under sunny skies. Days 2 and 3 of the fair look similar.

Temperatures are likely to edge up during the fair’s first weekend, into the mid 80s with the chance for some thunderstorms developing on Saturday, Aug. 23. It’s too early to make any precise predictions about the amount of rain or the timing, though.
