On Thursday, October 8, William Floyd Middle School hosted their second annual Hispanic Heritage Night for the school community! The event was coordinated by assistant principal Roanie Taveras and served as a way to highlight Hispanic cultures and traditions during the national celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Students in Ms. Diers, Ms. Scimea and Mr. Armone’s World Language classes proudly showcased a poster project that they had been working on in the weeks leading up to the event, all of which featured extensive research they conducted on several Latin American countries. Each poster was vibrant, colorful and filled with all of the important details a traveler may want to know about the respective countries they were based on. These posters also played an important role in helping the school community cast their vote in WFMS principal Camelle Person’s returning, “Where in Latin America will Mrs. Person go?” contest.

Hispanic Heritage Night attendees got to enjoy cultural cuisine that was donated from several community partners. Click the image for additional photos.
Attendees also sang karaoke with Ms. Santos, participated in photo ops set up around the cafeteria, visited representatives from the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library to learn about library programs, signed up for library cards and had the opportunity to take home some free goodies and enjoy a selection of cultural cuisine donated by several eateries from within the community. Additionally, the WFMS Kickline team, coached by Ms. Rodriguez and Ms. Rojas, and the WFMS Latin Dance team, coached by Mr. Levy and Ms. Diers, added even more excitement to this festive evening by putting on a pair of outstanding performances.
WFMS would like to extend a special thank you to the vendors who helped make Hispanic Heritage Night possible, including Behavioral Strategies L.I., Cinco De Mayo, El Sabor Del Pueblo, Gala Fresh Farms, Guinta’s Meat Farms Supermarket, H & E Bagel Café and La Placita Meat Market.

About Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from September 15 to October 15 and serves as a yearly celebration of Hispanic and Latino history, culture and influence in the United States. The specific span of dates that Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated on were chosen because they coincide with the celebration of Independence Day in several Latin American countries. This tradition began in 1968 when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a week-long celebration into law before President Ronald Reagan expanded the celebration into its current month-long format in 1988.
