DENVER (KDVR) – Areas across Colorado are seeing high wind speeds throughout the start of the week, causing all sorts of chaos around the state from blown-down signs to canceled flights.
On Monday, wind gusts hit as high as 96 mph. Meanwhile, winds blew down an overhead sign on Interstate 25, which held up the southbound morning commute. Xcel received thousands of reports of power outages around the Denver metro area on Monday morning.
At 8 a.m. on Monday, Denver International Airport posted a travel alert on X warning passengers about the windy day and urging them to check their flights and airline status.
Going into Tuesday, the airport is still encouraging travelers to check flights due to another windy day.
Denver International Aiport cancellations, delays
FlightAware was tracking cancellations and delays at DIA on Monday. Here are the reports as of 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
In total, there are 520 delays and 33 cancellations at DIA.
Most of the canceled and delayed flights are from SkyWest, Southwest and United with 16, eight and five flights canceled, respectively, while there were 23 SkyWest flights delayed, 383 from CommuteAir and 65 flights from United.
As of Monday morning, DIA had the highest amount of canceled or delayed flights out of any airport in the nation. Heading into Tuesday, the high amount still stands.
According to FlightAware, inbound flights were delayed at their origin an average of 1 hour 50 minutes due to wind.
The airport told FOX31 there were some delays due to wind and that passengers should check with their carrier for delays and cancellations before going to the airport.
