RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team hung tough with the University of Houston Cougars in their exhibition match on Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex falling 2-0.
After allowing a goal in the early minutes of the first 30 minute session, the Vaqueros settled in and didn’t allow very many opportunities until the last seven minutes when the Cougars added their second goal.
The back line held their ground denying crosses and keeping the Cougars out of the box.
Offensively, the Vaqueros put the pressure on the Cougars getting several good looks. In the second 30 minute session, the Vaqueros had the Cougars on their heels.
In their lone exhibition of the preseason, UTRGV Head Coach Mark Foster liked what he saw from his squad today.
“This group of players only got together only two Saturday mornings ago,” Foster said. “To put a performance like that in, after two weeks, against a power-four opponent. I am absolutely delighted. They won. They took their chances and deserved to win but for large periods of the game we were on top and creating chances. The positive for me is that we looked solid defensively, which I want. Today, against a really good opponent, we were able to create chances and looked dangerous at times. That’s a lot to build on.”
The Vaqueros will now get ready for their season opener on Aug. 15 when they host the Texas Southern Tigers at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Attendance is free but fans will need a digital pass to gain entrance. Fans can sign up for the UTRGV Soccer Pass at GoUTRGV.com/SoccerPass.
