PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Airline catering workers at Phoenix Sky Harbor are calling on city officials to enforce heat safety rules, saying they are still working in unsafe conditions despite the city’s ordinance.

Last month, Phoenix officials accused airport catering vendor LSG Sky Chefs of violating the city’s heat and safety ordinance. A city inspector reported that some of the company’s trucks did not have functioning air conditioning.

On Thursday, dozens of LSG Sky Chefs workers gathered outside Terminal 4, marching and chanting while holding signs.

They say conditions have not improved since the city’s initial report and are urging the city to take further action. “We are out here shouting loud and clear, hoping that the city takes us seriously and enforces the law that they passed,” said Victoria Stahl with labor union UNITE HERE Local 11.

LSG Sky Chefs employees deliver in-flight food and beverages to planes on the tarmac. Workers say that without working air conditioning, the heat inside the trucks can become extreme.

“It’s absolutely unimaginable what working conditions these workers are suffering in. The unimaginable heat that they’re experiencing every day has extreme health effects,” Stahl said.

A spokesperson for LSG Sky Chefs responded to the violations by saying that the ordinance does not specifically define what “functioning AC” means or provide a clear standard.

Phoenix City Councilwoman Betty Guardado has indicated the council may revisit the ordinance next month to clarify the language and address the concerns raised.
