Factchequeado is pleased to announce the selection of the 12 media organizations that will participate in the first edition of IA Impulsa, an acceleration program that—supported by the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation—focuses on providing artificial intelligence support to Spanish-language newsrooms in the United States and Puerto Rico.

At a time when AI tools are reshaping how information is produced, distributed, and verified, we want to ensure that media serving Latino communities are not left behind in these transformations.

“This program was created to help close existing gaps—between those with access to experts, training, and advanced tools, and those who, despite being closer to their communities, often have fewer resources to explore and adopt these technologies. Our focus is on supporting Spanish-language outlets that know their audiences well and want to use AI to strengthen—rather than replace—journalistic work,” said Sebastián Auyanet, Factchequeado’s AI Lead and Program Manager.

The selected media organizations are:

“Through mentorship, technical support, and spaces for collaboration and peer exchange, we aim to help these organizations experiment with AI in a safe, ethical, and strategic way—testing practical use cases that improve their day-to-day work, documenting learnings, and generating references that can inspire other newsrooms across the region,” added Laura Zommer, Co-Founder and CEO of Factchequeado.

With this first cohort, we aim to:

  • Represent geographic diversity: 8 U.S. states (with Arizona, California, and Texas represented by two outlets each), plus Puerto Rico.

  • Include a range of formats: 7 digital outlets, 3 radio stations, and 2 print newspapers.

  • Combine different organizational sizes and models: from community and hyperlocal media to regional and national outlets.

  • Work with both nonprofit media (9 in the cohort) and for-profit organizations that share the goal of better serving Latino audiences.

Throughout the program, we will support these newsrooms in:

  • Exploring and adopting artificial intelligence tools (developed by Chequeado, Maldita, and Factchequeado) to strengthen their journalistic work and support sustainability.

  • Developing AI implementation policies aligned with their editorial missions and service goals for their audiences.

  • Sharing learnings and best practices with the broader Spanish-language media ecosystem in the United States and Puerto Rico.
