Mexican brunch pop-up Requinto named one of best brunches in America

Chef Erick Pineda brings Mexican brunch pop-up Requinto to Linger Longer Lounge in Phoenix. USA TODAY named Requinto one of the best U.S. brunches.

OpenTable recently published a list of the top brunch restaurants in the U.S., and three Arizona spots made the cut. The three restaurants were Cafe Monarch in Scottsdale and Rusconi’s American Kitchen and théa Mediterranean Rooftop in Phoenix.

Cafe Monarch offers a weekly Sunday brunch featuring omelettes with wild mushrooms, comte cheese and potato; steak and eggs frites; and orange pancakes. The restaurant is rated 4.9 stars on OpenTable.

Rusconi’s American Kitchen, which is rated 4.8 stars on OpenTable, offers a massive Sunday brunch menu ranging from omelettes and egg dishes to pancakes and french toast to New Orleans-style beignets and, of course, bloody mary’s and mimosas.

théa Mediterranean Rooftop, located at The Global Ambassador Hotel in Phoenix, also has 4.8 stars on OpenTable. théa’s weekend brunch focuses less on breakfast items, which is fitting given that the restaurant does not open until noon. “Brunch” menu highlights include spicy tuna crispy rice, grilled skirt steak, chicken souvlaki skewers, truffle flatbread and a Mediterranean dip flight.

Are they really the best brunches in metro Phoenix?

While all three of the restaurants on the list offer great brunches, the reported methodology for the list raises some questions about its legitimacy.

According to OpenTable, the list was “generated” from over 10 million reviews from verified OpenTable diners over the course of a year. While each of the restaurants listed has a brunch option at least once a week, they are not the specialty of those restaurants. Rather, most on the list are highly rated fine dining establishments that are more well known for their dinner options.

Phoenix is home to many restaurants that do specialize in brunch, including Requinto, which was recently named best in the U.S. by USA Today.
