BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Northeastern State University Broken Arrow is hosting its Fiesta de Mayo art exhibit, a Latino art showcase, throughout May.

NSU said the showcase will open Friday with a public reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet participating artists and view the featured works.

The exhibition will remain on display through May 31 and will be open to the public during regular campus hours. All artwork in the collection will be available for purchase, offering the community a chance to directly support local Latino artists.

For artist Tony Romo, Fiesta de Mayo invites viewers to broaden their perspective.

“My work will mainly feature landscapes, still lifes and florals,” said Romo. “My art reflects both who I am and how I see the world around me. I hope visitors engage with the collection with an open perspective. It’s important to look beyond a single artist and experience the full range of voices represented in the show.”

As part of the event organizing team at Vega Treviño PR, Curator Margarita Vega said the exhibition highlights both the talent and importance of Latino artists in the community.

“The purpose of this exhibit is to show local Latino artists that their work is relevant and deserving of recognition at the highest level,” said Vega. “This gallery space reflects that value. I hope the community takes time this month to experience and appreciate the creativity of our local Latino artists.”

NSU President Rodney Hanley said the showcase reflects the university’s role in connecting learning with community engagement.

“Experiences like this extend learning beyond the classroom,” said Hanley. “They give our students and community the opportunity to engage with different perspectives while celebrating the people and cultures that shape our region.”

NSU-BA said the collection features a wide range of styles and perspectives, highlighting the diversity of voices within the Latino community.

This Fiesta de Mayo Latino art exhibit is a proud part of the wider Fiesta de Mayo celebrations, hosted by Broken Arrow’s Rose District.
