The Houston Texans NFL franchise has revealed fresh details regarding its Toro District project, with the first renderings released of the mixed-use development.
The Texans announced plans for the 83-acre project earlier this month. The team has partnered with Harris County and Howard Hughes Communities, the real estate arm of Howard Hughes Holdings.
The development will include a 22-acre global headquarters and training complex for the Texans, which will participate in the development through an affiliate. The Texans are currently headquartered at NRG Stadium, but scheduling issues have arisen as the stadium is also used by Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.
Gensler, the global architecture and design firm, is leading the master planning design for Toro District, while Howard Hughes Communities is managing leasing for the development.
Toro District will include a mix of retail, restaurant, hotel, entertainment, commercial and medical space and will form part of the Bridgeland Central community in Cypress, Texas. The project is slated for completion in 2029, with work due to begin later this year.
The Texans’ new headquarters will include an indoor fieldhouse and three outdoor NFL training fields. The fieldhouse is designed to host nearly 16,000 attendees and will double up as an events venue.
The headquarters and athletic complex will expand training capabilities and create opportunities for youth programming, community engagement and educational partnerships. Students from local schools will gain access to internships, structured career pathway programmes, and sports-focused academic initiatives.
Toro District will also include multiple flag football fields next to the Texans’ headquarters, along with the capacity for up to 21 volleyball courts on-site.
The site will also include one million square feet of premium office space, 300,000 square feet of retail and restaurants, 250,000 square feet of regional healthcare and sports medicine, two hotels, and 1,300 units of multi-family residences. A 25,000-square-foot Harris County annex is also part of the planned development, extending county services to the Northwest Houston region and providing resources to locals.
‘World-class environment’
Cal McNair, chair and chief executive of the Texans, said: “Toro District will be a world-class environment for everyone connected to our organisation. We’re incorporating best practices from around the world while staying authentically Texans – ensuring that competitive excellence and community impact remain at the centre of everything we do.
“This facility will give our players and coaches a true competitive advantage and position them for sustained success. It also underscores our long-term commitment to Harris County and our dedication to driving growth and opportunity throughout the region. This is a historic win for our team and our community.”
David O’Reilly, chief executive of Howard Hughes, added: “At Howard Hughes, we believe communities are built over decades – not development cycles. Toro District reflects what’s possible when long-term vision, disciplined planning, and strong public-private partnership come together.
“The Texans are planting a lasting flag in Bridgeland, reinforcing their commitment to this region. Together, we are creating opportunities that strengthen infrastructure, expand access to services, and deliver lasting benefits for the families and businesses who call Northwest Houston home. This is growth by design, and it will shape this community for generations.”
