NEW YORK (WABC) — If you’re looking for a fresh start this season, how about springing into a new job?
Brooklyn-based job search website Bandana ranks the most popular jobs and employers in New York City based on the 1.5 million people applying for work through its website.
This platform’s mission is to improve the lives of everyday Americans, including those 80 million hourly workers who power this country forward.
Nina Pineda has the top 10 most popular jobs in New York City:
1. MTA
2. City of New York
3. Amtrak
4. NYU Langone Health
5. NYS Unified Court System
6. Con Edison
7. New York State Department of Labor
8. Mount Sinai
9. Delta Airlines
10. MSG Entertainment
The MTA is looking for track workers, administrative assistants, and signal trainees. There are also a lot of health care jobs available. In particular, at NYU Langone Health and Mount Sinai.
At Bandana.com, which specializes in helping hourly and entry-level workers find better, higher-paying jobs, the job search engine sees a trend.
“In New York City, there’s a lot of excitement for working in the public sector, working for those civil service jobs,” said Bandana’s Media and Marketing Lead Paolo Makalinao.
One and a half million people applied for jobs that don’t have the sexiest titles, like track worker, administrative assistant, court officer, dispatcher, or city laborer. But they all offer the same thing: good pay, great benefits, and the opportunity to move up.
“And of course working for the government has not been a sexy thing. Stability, overtime, pension, a great life, more than 6-figure government jobs,” Makalinao said.
“I think the big thing in New York is we have a lot of people that are underemployed and underpaid. So, our goal, especially at Bandana, is to get people full-time jobs with great pay,” Makalinao said. “And I think that’s what New Yorkers are really vying for: to be able to work an eight-hour job for they’re getting a good salary, and then afterwards they can come back to their family, spend time for themselves.”
Jobs in local and state government grew in popularity, and the need for healthcare workers put area hospitals into the top 10. Many individuals sought jobs in law enforcement with New York courts and the NYPD.
“They do start at around 60 per year when you come in as a trainee or recruit. You’ll actually have top salaries of 130,000 to 140,000 base pay after around five to six years, and that’s not counting overtime,” Makalinao said. “After working for a good 25 to 30 years, you retire, you’ll never have to work again, and you’ll have a good pension for the rest of your life.”
Bandana’s co-founder and CEO, Timothy Makalinao, says jobs powering the city that never sleeps were the most applied for on their site.
“Actually a lot of these jobs that are the apprenticeships, the unions, the MTA, the builders, these are incredible jobs for America, where they are aware that they’re building the foundation of this country and making it so that we can get to work every day,” Timothy said. “Our streets are clean, the trains are running, and all of the utilities that we have all work.”
Based on a survey of job seekers, Bandana says the qualities in a job most sought after are stability, overtime, opportunity for growth, and pension.
Bandana’s mission is to meet workers where they are, so yes, they list all sorts of jobs. But it aims to help qualified candidates find union jobs, apprenticeships, and skilled trade positions.
A cool thing about the app’s features that we saw is its location-based job search. This works similar to looking for a restaurant near you. Pin jobs either by your home or the subway stop, which is convenient to your lifestyle, so you don’t waste a lot of time during your new job commute.
