New regulations on signs around Anthem are in place.

(ACC/Submitted)

Call it a “sign of the times.”

On April 22, the Anthem Community Council Board of Directors voted to update the commercial signage guidelines. Key changes impact how businesses advertise within the community.

Under the new revised rules, A-frames, banners and flutter flags can now be displayed for up to 45 days — an increase from the previous 30-day limit.

In certain cases, businesses can now obtain approval to keep A-frames up year-round.

The changes have been pondered for a few months. The Anthem Business Support Committee reviewed and unanimously recommended the proposed guidelines for the Board’s consideration in March. The ACC Board then reviewed and discussed a draft at its March 25 before making a final decision.

The board notes these updates “are part of an effort to align regulations with existing city and county ordinances and balance business visibility with community standards.”

The ACC stresses to business owners “all signage must comply with applicable regulations enforced by the city of Phoenix on the west side of I-17 and Maricopa County on the east side, along with any other relevant agencies.”

No advertising device may be displayed on any lot without prior written approval from the ACC and the property owner or managing agent, with applications required at least 15 days before the desired installation.

Banners and flutter flags can be approved for a maximum of 45 days at a time, up to four times per calendar year, in non-consecutive months.

A-frames generally have the same restrictions — though “approval may be granted for year-round display.”

Key fine print:

• Devices may only be displayed on the applicant’s property.

• Devices may only advertise businesses located on that property.

• No device may encroach upon city, county, or state easements or rights-of-way.

As for aesthetics, the ACC demands signs:

• Shall be visually attractive and professionally fabricated.

• Shall not exceed 12 feet in height.

• Shall not be illuminated.

• No windblown devices or balloons.
