In this episode of “Tiempo,” we’re looking at the growth of the Latino population in the suburbs.

While the city continues to be home to the largest concentration of Latinos, the settlement patterns have changed.

Specifically, new research reveals a demographic shift where Latinos set up roots in New York, though more are settling in the suburbs.

We’ll talk more about the CUNY Graduate Center’s findings in this episode.

There’s also another eye-opening study about the New York immigration population in the state.

The findings corroborate what many have known all along, immigrants are an essential economic and social pillar.

The study also provides some noteworthy numbers, such as immigrants without legal status contribute $3.1 billion in state and local taxes, and 32% of business owners in New York State are immigrants.

The Immigration Research Initiative compiled the data. It is a non-profit that studies immigration issues.

Anthony Caputo, from the Immigration Research Initiative, is joining us to help us analyze the numbers.

Tiempo with Joe Torres airs Sunday mornings at 11:30 on Channel 7, WABC-TV in New York City.
