University of St. Thomas student athletes and new graduates in the Cameron School of Business, Samuel Lampson and Gabriel Garner came to the University of St. Thomas in Houston to play baseball. What they found on campus was so much more than they imagined.

“Just having 55 guys on the same exact schedule every day — it’s just cool,” Garner said. “It’s like a family here honestly. Having only 30 to 50 people in your classroom, you can build a relationship with your teacher. It just really helps me out.”

Sam LampsonLampson, a shortstop and graduate with a Master of Business Administration in Finance, and Garner, an outfielder and graduate with Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing, for the UST Baseball team, enjoy the difference of the NCAA Division III model, where students can engage in campus activities and have a vibrant campus community life beyond the ball field.

Sam Lampson at a Career Services event.

“I remember last year, one of the most fun events we had was the Chili Cook Off,” Lampson said. “Seeing the competition that wasn’t just about sports and having athletes and people who don’t play sports come together and compete was fun. Stuff like that brings us out of our shell on campus.”

Alongside Lampson, Garner has enjoyed the fellowship as well.

Gabe Garner at a Career Services event.“We had a Bible study group in the JAAC and it was a cool experience,” Garner said. “Anyone, not just baseball people, but everyone can go and it was cool meeting new people.

“I feel like having those Bible studies allowed me to take a step forward in my faith but also help the people around me take that step forward as well,” Lampson said.

In this video, they share their story of brotherhood and finding community, and how UST helped prepare them for their next phase in life.
