San Antonio, Texas — SAN ANTONIO – Mexico’s World Cup opener against South Africa may have been played at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, but the connection to the match runs deep in San Antonio.

Former professional soccer player Agustin Mendez, now the girls’ soccer coach at Antonian College Preparatory School, says the city’s soccer talent continues to grow and could soon produce players ready to reach the next level.

“Pretty soon, I think in the next 10 years we’ll see more players getting opportunities not only in the local league, but also in the MLS. There are a lot of kids from here,” Mendez said.

Mendez played professionally in Mexico and once shared the field with current Mexico National Team coach Javier Aguirre.

Tonight at 9 p.m., FOX San Antonio takes a closer look at Mendez’s soccer journey, along with Humberto Gándara, CEO of Dreams FC San Antonio and International Director of Grupo Pachuca, who watched Mexico’s World Cup opener from Azteca Stadium.

The special report explores how both men are helping connect Mexico to San Antonio while creating new opportunities for the next generation of players on both sides of the border.
