DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) — California Highway Patrol officers shot a person on the 101 Freeway in the Boyle Heights area, prompting the closure of all northbound lanes Thursday morning.

The incident happened just before 7:30 a.m. on northbound lanes at 4th Street. The CHP says officers responded to a call of a pedestrian with a weapon, possibly a hammer, but additional details about what led up to the shooting were not available.

AIR7 was over the scene as officers investigated the scene. Authorities say the suspect was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Northbound lanes remained closed during the investigation. At one point, southbound lanes were also shut down, but they were reopened by 8:30 a.m.

Just before 4 p.m., AIR7 saw northbound lanes being reopened.

No officers were injured.

The California Department of Justice announced it had taken charge of the investigation.

The suspect’s name and age were not immediately available, and it was not clear if a hammer was recovered.
