The NBA world is in shock after LeBron James signs a two-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.

“That was like the option No. 4,” an executive from a team involved in the LeBron free agency sweepstakes told Dan Woike of The Athletic.

In the past few days, many put the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Golden State Warriors above Philadelphia in terms of chances to sign the veteran player.

The move places him alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and VJ Edgecombe, giving Philadelphia one of the NBA’s most talented groups.

Championship pursuit drove Philadelphia decision

In a report following the announcement, ESPN’s Shams Charania stressed that James made his priorities clear when he informed the Lakers on June 30 that he would continue his career elsewhere.

“I want to compete for a championship. I want to win at a high level. This is not a money-driven decision,” James’ position was described.

After evaluating his options, James concluded that Philadelphia gave him the best opportunity to compete for a fifth championship.

LeBron publicly described the move as his “last decision” and said he believed he could help turn Philadelphia into a championship team.
