As one of the most influential superstars of the 2000s era, Vince Carter earned a pretty penny in his 22-year NBA career, making as much as $17 million in a single season. With his high-flying act proving to be appealing to hoop fans of all ages, he earned millions more from his endorsement deals with Nike and Gatorade.

But despite all his wealth, VC never went on spending binges. Yes, he bought some jewelry here and there, and perhaps a luxurious vehicle or two, but he never lived too large, aware that NBA checks weren’t going to cash in forever.

Balling on a budget

A crucial mistake that many NBA players make is counting their chickens before the eggs hatch, which means they’re already thinking of the things they’ll purchase long before the money arrives in their bank accounts. And so, by the time that it does, they rarely consider saving or investing their money, focusing too much on accumulating material things.

Carter, though, learned early on that the more that he saved, the better off he would be in the future.

“Back then, it’s different than now. So for us, as the young guys on our team, you want to go hang out or, you know, whatever, you go with the team to eat dinners and stuff like that. And luckily, we had a guy like Oak who cooked, so you didn’t have to spend,” the Hall of Famer revealed. “So for as many times that we didn’t want to, it made sense to do so.”

Not to say that Air Canada didn’t have his fair share of wants, but the biggest difference was that he almost never spent his NBA salary, relying on the money he received from his endorsement deals and special appearances to indulge himself.

“I just knew, you know, until that one check from that big appearance, you can’t go buy cars, all the jewelry, until you can,” he emphasized. “Obviously, I had like a couple of big appearances and things that I did, deals that we signed that had nothing to do with basketball money, where I could get the jewelry because we came in the jewelry era. You know, chunky chains and all.”

Carter had his priorities

With more money in his pocket than he knew what to do with, the 6’6″ wingman could obviously buy whatever he wanted. But he held off on doing so, prioritizing his family and future first.

“I had to make sure I had to do what I had to do to get what I wanted, but still within the means of, you know, getting to make sure mom and those family had what they needed. A place, a car to survive in the cold, all of that,” Carter remarked.

The eight-time All-Star also dispensed a sage piece of advice to today’s generation of NBA players. With the staggering amounts of money that they’re making, Carter stressed that they must be involved in their finances. While it’s always prudent to have a trusted financial adviser, it’s always better to be aware of where every penny and dime is going.

“Ask questions. That was the other thing, you know, I learned. And I think for the first couple years, I learned from other guys who made those mistakes on their way out or, you know, had a couple years left to go out,” VC conveyed. “And, you know, I was like, I vow not to be that guy because I had the examples in front of me to learn from.”

Carter earned roughly $172,586,084 in NBA salaries, which meant he had more than enough to buy luxury cars and diamond chains. However, he resisted the temptation to splurge and live large, opting to focus on ensuring his money would last long after his playing years ended.
