BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – For Hispanic Heritage Month, we are introducing you to Latinas Evolving Magazine. Tayrin Tapia is the founder and owner of LE, which is a publication dedicated to celebrating excellence, amplifying voices, and creating opportunities for Latin entrepreneurs.
It all started in 2022 on social media. However, the page quickly gained traction, which has helped it evolve from an online presence to a magazine, and now, 4 years later, it is so much more than just a publication. Tapin explains, “I brought in underdog Latinas who were doing the work in the community, but not a lot of individuals knew about them. And from there it kind of just took off.”
Latinas Evolving is all about storytelling, which Tayrin thinks is always important to do, but especially during Hispanic Heritage Month. She says, “there’s so many things within our culture and heritage that are very similar. It is a great way to celebrate our stories, our ancestors’ stories, as well as our current stories and the stories that we want to continue to leave as a legacy.”
According to the Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy, “about 14% of business owners are Hispanic. Tayrin has a theory as to why there are so many latin entrepreneurs, that goes back to her own family.
At 42-years-old her grandmother was widowed and left to take care of her 11 kids. Tayrin explains, “I never realized how young she was to be left with 11 kids. So when I heard of this, I’m like, oh my God, how did grandma hold up a household with 11 kids? And through my uncles and aunts, I found out that they all just found a way to survive, you know? that’s where entrepreneurship, a lot of times comes from. A lot of times it comes from the need to survive, and they start a business because they need to find a way to give back to their families.”
Latinas Evolving has secured major partnerships from the Buffalo Bills, the Golisano Institiute, and more that allows them to support more businesses. Tapin shares, “We (Latinas Evolving Magazine) have also been able to help more than 180 entrepreneurs, not just Latinas, you know, Latinos as well. And and that’s in either resources, connecting them to the right individuals, creating the spaces to create opportunities and circulate those opportunities.”
As the magazine grows more support, Latinas Evolving looks forward to hosting more events to create access and opportunities for small businesses and entrepreneurs. In explaining future goals for LE, Tapin says, “next year I’m looking to do our first LE summit here(at the Golisano Institute). We want to focus on bringing the education and the resources and all the information small businesses, and entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs, including students from Galisano, that we would love to involve and hope to do it right here. As well as come out with our quarterly magazine instead of just two magazines.”
