Jason Kidd expressed openness about coaching again in the NBA. While his family remains his current focus, he is also keeping active in communication to help several players, mainly Jalen Brunson and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Jason Kidd is keeping his door open for another head coaching opportunity in the NBA after his shocking exit from the Dallas Mavericks.
In a media interview with Rappler at the NBA House Philippines 2026 in Manila, Kidd still made it clear that his current focus remains on spending time with his family.
“I think I love coaching. I love to watch players get better. I want to win, and I want to help the team win,” Kidd said.
“I would never say no to coaching, maybe somewhere down the future, but right now, I’m just at home really trying to enjoy with my family.”
Jason Kidd leaves Dallas Mavericks in mutual decision
Jason Kidd and the Dallas Mavericks parted ways earlier this offseason. The decision was made mutually by both sides.
Kidd exited Dallas following the front-office takeover by Masai Ujiri, who was hired by the franchise as its newest team president. Dusty May emerged as his successor as the Mavs’ newest head coach.
The former NBA superstar handled the Mavericks for five seasons, compiling a total record of 205-205. With Luka Doncic, he helped Dallas reach the 2024 NBA Finals, losing in five games against the eventual champion Boston Celtics.
Upon the unexpected trade of the Slovenian superstar, Kidd and the Mavs struggled to compete in the past two seasons. Kidd capped off his final year with the Mavs with a lowly 26-win outing in the 2025-26 campaign.
Before joining the Mavs in 2021, the Hall of Famer served as an assistant for the Los Angeles Lakers for two seasons (2019-2021). He had prior head coaching stints with the Brooklyn Nets (2013-14) and the Milwaukee Bucks (2014-2018).

While he remains open to possibly coaching again soon, Jason Kidd is keeping his line open by mainly sharing his expertise with two of the superstars he previously handled.
According to the former NBA star, both Jalen Brunson and Giannis Antetokounmpo have been in constant communication with him.
Kidd coached Brunson for just a single season (2021-22) in the Mavs. The reigning NBA Finals MVP is aiming to lead the New York Knicks for a back-to-back title finish next season.
Meanwhile, Kidd played an important role in Antetokounmpo’s rise to superstardom in Milwaukee. The Greek superstar is now off to a new chapter with the Miami Heat,
“I’m just watching the game and seeing if I can help others still from the coaching side,” Kidd noted. “I’m always talking to Jalen Brunson and Giannis [Antetokounmpo], so just trying to help others now that I’m not coaching.”
