A group of prominent Latino leaders is asking the Democratic Governors Association
to invest in Rep. Gina Hinjosa’s bid to topple Gov. Greg Abbott
this fall – a bid that seemed like more of a longshot before poll after poll has
shown her within striking distance of becoming the first Democrat elected to
the governor’s mansion in a generation.
A victory in
November would also make Hinojosa the first Latina elected as Texas’ chief
executive officer, noted the group of Latino leaders mostly from around here. The
GOP gains made among Latino voters in Texas over the last decade did not happen
without serious investments from Republicans, especially by Gov. Abbott in the
Rio Grande Valley since 2014.
