DENVER (KDVR) — Coloradans will have the opportunity to get a free gun safe at an educational event.
In Colorado, all firearms are legally required to be “responsibly and securely stored” when not in use. The purpose of the law is to “prevent access by unsupervised juveniles and other unauthorized users.”
The law, which was passed in 2021, makes it a crime to knowingly store a firearm in a way that a juvenile can access without permission. It also requires licensed gun dealers to provide a locking device with each firearm at the time of the sale or transfer.
A similar law passed in May, requiring firearms to be secured while unattended in a vehicle.

Firearm safes will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The event will also include educational opportunities and resources regarding gun safety.
The event is being held thanks to a partnership involving multiple metro area agencies. Here are the details:
- When: Thursday, July 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Where: Good Samaritan Hospital, 200 Exempla Circle, Lafayette at the back of the emergency department parking lot
Gun violence among juveniles a concern in Colorado
A recent analysis from the Common Sense Institute, a think tank focused on free enterprise in Colorado, found that while the amount of crimes committed by kids in Colorado has fallen nearly 30% since 2010, the nature of the crimes kids are committing is becoming more violent.
Between 2010 and 2023, there was a 210.4% increase in the number of murders committed by children, according to the report.
