The MLB Draft has just passed and the Miami Marlins made some interesting picks in the early rounds, and then more intriguing picks in the latter rounds. As you may or may not be aware, picking the prospects is only the first part. Teams then need to actually sign them to contracts. This means that it’s important to track who actually signs. So…who did The Fish sign so far?
Let’s start with The Fish’s first round pick OF PJ Morlando. Morlando’s pick value is at $4.70 million, but the Miami Marlins paid an under slot $3.40 million to officially bring him on board. This is a steal and could be a great bargain if he works out. Second round pick SS Carter Johnson was a different story however…. the pick value is at $1.60 million, but The Fish paid $2.80 million for his services. I hope that it will be worth it in his case.
The complementary pick RHP Aiden May signed under slot as well! His pick value is at $1.14 million, but he was signed for $900,000. Another great budget signing for The Fish here. Third round pick 2B Gage Miller was signed at the exact $800.80 K value that he’s worth. Fourth round pick OF Fenwick Trimble is worth $589 K, but was also signed at a budget price of $550 K. This is definitely good for the team.
RHP Grant Shepardson’s pick value is $427 K, but for some reason The Fish way overpaid for him, giving him $897.50 K to bring him on to the team. SS Payton Green is a sixth rounder whose pick slot value is $331.30 K, The Fish ended up paying $328.80 K to bring him on board. This is a slight bargain so I can only look at it as a solid signing.
Seventh round pick RHP Nick Brink is worth $259.60 K, but was signed at a bargain price of $195 k. That’s more good news, though all prospects won’t work out, getting them at bargain prices is a good thing for the Miami Marlins.
