May marks Older Americans Month (OAM)—a time to reflect on the invaluable contributions of our elders and to recognize the growing and diverse community of older adults across the country. This year’s national theme, “Powered by Connection,” emphasizes the essential role that relationships and community ties play in healthy aging.

Hispanic older adults represent one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing segments of the senior population in the United States. Nowhere is their presence more vibrant than in South Florida—particularly in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties—where their contributions are deeply woven into the fabric of daily life. From preserving cultural traditions and nurturing families to driving local economies and engaging in civic leadership, Hispanic elders are foundational to the strength and vitality of our communities.

As I shared as President of the Latino Center on Aging (LCA) during our weekly radio program Para Mayores on La Nueva Poderosa 670AM, “Hispanic seniors embody a rich cultural heritage, unwavering resilience, and a deep-rooted commitment to family and community. Their example continues to inspire and guide future generations.”

To recognize these tremendous contributions, a special forum celebrating Older Americans Month will be held on May 22 at Miami Dade College West Campus in Doral, organized by the Doral Family Journal.

The event will bring together community leaders, caregivers, and aging advocates to discuss the needs and achievements of older adults, with a special focus on the Hispanic elderly population.

The forum will include expert panels, personal stories, and local resource information to empower seniors and their families.

“In South Florida, inspired by the LCA of the need to advocate for Hispanic seniors, we at the Doral Family Journal fully support and lead activities to enhance the living conditions of our elderly,” said Ettore Sabatella, Editor-in-Chief of the Doral Family Journal. “It is a responsibility we take seriously—not just in May, but all year round.”

As we celebrate Older Americans Month 2025, let us remember that aging is a journey enriched by connection, culture, and community. Let’s uplift and support the elders who have given us so much—especially the Hispanic seniors who continue to shape the vibrant fabric of American life.
