Ikea plans to open additional stores across Texas.
HOUSTON — After 33 years, Ikea will open a second Houston-area furniture store.
The Swedish furniture giant announced that it expects to open a 93,000-square-foot store at Kimco Realty Corp.’s (NYSE: KIM) Center at Baybrook at 19801 Gulf Freeway in Webster — just south of Baybrook Mall — by next summer.
A project filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation puts the estimated build-out cost at $16.5 million for the former Bel Furniture and Chair King space. It lists Dallas-based Wares Malcomb as the design firm. TDLR filings are preliminary and subject to change.
It will be only the second larger-size Ikea in Houston after its 300,000-square-foot store at 7810 Katy Freeway. That store opened in 2004, though a previous building on the same site first opened in 1992.
