Venezuelan musician and composer Ella Bric made history as the first woman to win producer of the year at the 2018 Latin Grammys. The trumpet player made a name for herself after moving to New York City and most recently made waves on Karol G’s Mañana Sera Bonito Tour.
In this special collaboration of Latino USA and WNYC, Latin Grammy winning producer Ella Bric joins Janae Pierre, host of NYC Now at The Greene Space for a live conversation and performance. They discuss the recent earthquakes in Venezuela, composing music for Futuro Media’s Our Thing: The Birth of Salsa in Nueva York and how her Venezuelan background, jazz training and Latin music traditions shape her sound.
Ella Bric was born and raised in Venezuela. She started playing with El Sistema at a young age, the orchestra and musical education program for children in Venezuela. Born Linda Briceño, she moved to New York City to eventually play with big names like Wynton Marsalis and Arturo Sandoval before she started composing, arranging, and producing her own music. In 2018, she made history as the first woman to win Producer of the Year at the Latin Grammys. She adopted her stage name, Ella Bric and she’s since received the MUSA Elena Casals Award as a Revelation Artist and toured with Karol G on her Mañana Será Bonito tour.
