Doña María, a popular Mexican restaurant serving authentic Chihuahua cuisine, has moved to Richardson.
After nearly eight years at its original location along T I Boulevard. in Dallas, restaurant owners Jorge Moreno and Angela Huerta decided to expand their footprint and hours for hungry customers. That includes the addition of dinner, after previously only serving lunch.
“We feel that we are giving back to people a little bit of what they have given us, making them feel at home with their food and many memories of their hometown,” said Moreno.
The novelty of the new Doña María is reflected in its interior decoration. An entire wall displays an image of El Chepe, the tourist train in northern Mexico that connects the cities of Chihuahua and Los Mochis in Sinaloa. It also holds the names of the most representative neighborhoods in the city of Juárez and pieces of clothing from the indigenous groups Rarámuri and Tarahumara, alongside other traditional garments.
The first Doña María location was 1,200 square feet and maxed out at 54 customers. The new space is more than four times bigger, at 5,400 square feet, and can accommodate 110 customers.
Doña María‘s menu will continue to offer traditional eats from Ciudad Juárez, such as chile relleno burritos, carne con chile and other stews, as well as turkey tail torta, gorditas and various other dishes.
“The menu remains the same, as does our intention to keep the place 100% family-friendly, so we don’t sell any alcoholic beverages,” said Moreno.
The restaurant is named after Moreno’s mother, María Díaz, who always wanted to have a restaurant and helps her family in the business.
“I’m thrilled because my family is getting ahead,” she said.
But there is a secret of sorts behind the name. María’s real name is not, in fact, María. It’s Tránsita, the same name as her grandmother and mother.
“It was a very ugly name, and my husband changed it because he didn’t like it,” she said. “And that’s how I ended up with María — and now there’s even a restaurant named after me.”
Doña María Mexican Restaurant is located at 101 S. Coit Road, Suite 84, Richardson. Doña María.
