MARTA reopening Airport Station

After a few weeks of renovations, MARTA is reopening its station at the world’s busiest airport just in time for the unofficial start of summer.

ATLANTA – MARTA riders who used to take the train to get to and from the Atlanta airport are in for a treat on Monday. The station, which has been closed for renovations over the last six weeks, is finally reopening.

Crews have been working for six weeks on renovations, including installing new flooring, replacing the ceiling and adding upgraded lighting.

The project started at the beginning of April and is reopening just before the busy Memorial Day travel period.

Joshua Muldrow works at an airport parking location nearby, and he said he’s impressed by the upgrade.

“I take MARTA every single day from Austell, and the shuttle bus was a big inconvenience,” Muldrow said. “We were talking on the bus, saying ‘It better be nice,’ and it is really nice. To come in and see them doing something for us hardworking citizens out here is great.”

During the closure, MARTA provided shuttles between the College Park station and the airport. Leaders said they transported between 7,000 and 9,000 people daily.

Meanwhile, renovations are ongoing to parking at the airport. Last year, the airport shut down its south economy lot, eliminating more than 3,000 parking spots.

Construction of that parking deck is expected to last much longer going through 2026.

The renovations come ahead of what’s expected to be a busy weekend for Memorial Day travelers.

The airport projects that 2.5 million passengers will travel to, from, and through Hartsfield-Jackson during a one-week span starting on Wednesday.

Friday, May 24, is expected to be the busiest day with projections of about 351,000 passengers.
