Boston firefighters battled flames and heavy smoke on the rooftops of buildings along East Broadway on Saturday afternoon.The first radio calls about the fire were made shortly before 2 p.m. A plume of smoke was seen rising over South Boston. “When we got there, the roof deck and part of the roof structure itself was on fire at 587 (E. Broadway) and it was spreading to the adjacent building, 583,” said Deputy Chief Steven Shaffer.Witness videos showed firefighters appeared to be focused on the rooftops of two buildings. Firefighters struck three alarms to call additional resources to the scene. “The roof was burned pretty well, but it didn’t get into the main structure of the building,” said Shaffer. At least eight people were displaced by the fire. No injuries were reported from the fire but Shaffer said responders found one woman in the adjacent building who needed treatment for an unrelated issue.

The Boston Fire Department confirmed that a fire in the rear of 587 E. Broadway spread to one adjacent building. Firefighters struck three alarms to call additional resources to the scene.
