From volunteering and donating to supporting local businesses, discover meaningful ways to make a difference across the Boston community.
On April 15, the City of Boston will unite again for One Boston Day to honor the courage, generosity, and determination shown by the people of Boston and individuals around the world in response to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. This day showcases the remarkable strength and resilience shown on that tragic day.
“Every year since, we have all — residents and visitors alike — come together on One Boston Day to perform acts of kindness for one another,” says Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. She encourages everyone to reflect and help make a positive change in our community on April 15 and beyond.
With brighter days ahead, this is an opportunity to connect with the greater Boston community. Every act of kindness, however big or small, contributes to what makes Boston our home.
Volunteer opportunities
Join the Mayor’s Office of Civic Organizing for a neighborhood cleanup at Franklin Park Playstead on April 18, starting at 9 a.m., or call a local animal shelter to see how you can help.
For Boston University students, check out the Community Service Center for upcoming events and service opportunities. Alumni can also participate by joining the Alumni Association’s Global Days of Service. Just an hour of your time can make a difference.
Donate
One Boston Day is a great time to give back through donations. Many Boston Marathon runners run in support of causes that are personally meaningful to them. Consider donating to a cause you’re passionate about or contributing directly to the BU community.
This is also a perfect opportunity for some spring cleaning. If you’re clearing out your closet, consider donating your clothes. Each year, approximately 230,000 tons of clothing and textiles are disposed of in Massachusetts, and about 85 percent could be reused or recovered. Visit boston.gov/textiles to find a local drop-off location and give your items a second life.
Support local businesses
Supporting small and local businesses is a meaningful way to give back to the community. If you need a cup of coffee or a quick bite, try Thinking Cup, which has several locations across the city. You can also explore locally owned bookstores like Trident Booksellers & Cafe or Beacon Hill Books & Cafe. For a wider selection of local goods, head to the Boston Public Market, which features a variety of local food and artisanal vendors.
Cheer on the runners at the Boston Marathon
Cheering for the runners at the Boston Marathon is one of the most exciting ways to engage in the city’s tradition. This year, the 130th Boston Marathon will take place on April 20. Your energy and encouragement can make a significant difference for the runners, and that spirit is what makes Marathon Monday truly special.
Find your own way to spread kindness on One Boston Day
One Boston Day is focused on discovering meaningful ways to give back and strengthen our community. Whether it’s checking in on an elderly neighbor, surprising a friend with a cup of coffee, or taking time for self-care, every act of kindness adds to the spirit of the day.
Find a way to spread positivity and celebrate the strength and resilience that define the city of Boston.
