Hispanic Heritage Month is important because it’s a time to pause and really honor the stories, traditions, and contributions of the Latino community. It’s about more than just music or food—it’s about celebrating the strength and beauty of our culture, and remembering how much Latinos have helped shape this country. When people take the time to celebrate with us, it shows that our voices, our families, and our histories matter.

There are so many ways to celebrate. It can be as simple as showing up to events, supporting Latino businesses, or taking the time to learn something new about our heritage. Here in Whitewater, we’re lucky to have so many opportunities right on campus. The Spanish Club hosts weekly events on Monday at 5:30 in the Laurentide third floor lounge where students can practice language and connect with the culture in a fun way. For Día de los Muertos, the Roberto Art Gallery will hold a special reception on October 28, 2025 at 6pm where the community can come together, learn, and experience the beauty of this tradition that honors our loved ones who have passed.

Latinos Unidos also hosts events every Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. in UC 261. These are fun, welcoming gatherings where students can celebrate our rich Latinx culture, connect with one another, and learn something new about our heritage. For us, embracing our culture means creating a space where students feel at home, even when we’re far from family. It’s powerful to see students light up when they feel represented and to watch others in the community join us in celebration and understanding. That’s what makes this month so meaningful—it reminds us that our culture is not just ours to keep, but a gift to share.
