Three months after first announcing their new Copa de la Diversión identity, the Stockton Ports’ transformation into the Stockton Cheladas is now in full swing and fans say it’s more than just a name change. It’s a celebration of community, culture and tradition.

The Cheladas, named after the spicy and flavorful Mexican drink, take the field every Sunday at Banner Island Ballpark as part of Copa Sundays, a nationwide Minor League Baseball campaign that highlights Latino heritage through reimagined team branding and ballpark experiences.

“We wanted something that really reflects Stockton,” said Chris Zavaglia, assistant general manager of the Ports. “The chelada is vibrant and rooted in Latino culture just like this city. And we wanted to build something the community could truly connect with.”

Zavaglia said the rebrand was a long time in the making and part of a broader goal to make the ballpark feel more inclusive. Stockton is one of the most diverse cities in the country, with nearly half its population identifying as Hispanic or Latino. “This isn’t just for baseball fans,” he said. “It’s about family, culture and tradition.”

On a recent Sunday game night, fans embraced the new identity with pride. Lance Shaw, a longtime season ticket holder, said the Cheladas branding resonated with him. “I grew up around strong Mexican traditions, and I think this is beautiful,” he said. “The food, the music, the colors it all feels like home. I wish the Ports would do even more of it.”

The Ports previously used the name Caballos de Stockton, but Zavaglia said the Cheladas branding brings fresh energy and has already received strong community support. The team’s themed merchandise, especially the vibrant hats and jerseys, quickly sold out after their initial March release.

“Fan feedback plays a big role in what we do,” Zavaglia said. “We’re always listening—whether it’s about game-day experiences, promotions or community events. That’s how we build something lasting.”

More than just a theme night, Copa Sundays have become a platform for cultural celebration. From Latin music and food specials to bold on-field uniforms, the Cheladas identity is helping the Ports connect with the city on a deeper level.

“We want people to feel like this is their place,” Zavaglia said. “Every Sunday is about bringing people together whether you’re a lifelong fan or coming for the first time.”
