Central New Mexico Community College, in partnership with Rio Rancho Public Schools, is excited to announce the groundbreaking of a new 43,800-square-foot Transportation Technology Facility at the RioTECH Campus on May 22. This facility will house CNM’s Automotive Technology and Electric Vehicle Technology programs, as well as classes in light-duty diesel technology. Both RioTECH and CNM students will utilize this facility to gain hands-on experience towards CNM certificates or associate degrees in transportation technology programs.

Elected officials, trades industry representatives, community leaders, CNM representatives, Rio Rancho Public School representatives, and trades students will be on site to celebrate the groundbreaking , where students will be trained to enter high-quality, high-demand careers.

CNM President Tracy Hartzler, Rio Rancho Public Schools Superintendent Sue Cleveland, a CNM Electric Vehicle program graduate, and a RioTECH student taking CNM automotive classes will all deliver remarks.

The groundbreaking ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. on the RioTECH Campus at 7001 Zenith Ct. NW Rio Rancho, NM 87144 on May 22.

“CNM is thrilled to be partnering with Rio Rancho Public Schools as we continue the evolution of RioTECH by breaking ground on the new Transportation Technology Center,” says CNM President Tracy Hartzler. “This is another momentous step forward in broadening opportunities for high school students and adult learners while addressing the workforce needs of our local economy. The state-of-the-art labs in this facility will provide students with engaging, hands-on, real-world learning experiences, as well as internship opportunities with local employers, that lead to CNM credentials and quality career opportunities in our economy.”

The new facility is expected to be completed by Fall 2026 and is designed similarly to the new Ted Chavez Trades & Technology Center on CNM’s Main Campus, with spaces that can be more easily adapted to meet learner and industry needs. The new facility will also include several new and improved features including:

  • Automotive and Light Duty Diesel Lab
  • Electric Vehicle Lab
  • Secure exterior fleet storage to accommodate 85 vehicles
  • Community outreach/industry vehicle showcase space
  • Student commons with exterior courtyard for students to relax or study

“This building is especially unique because it is dedicated solely to transportation technology programs,” says Jennie Daivs, the CNM project manager. “It will show not only learners, but also local industry partners, that CNM and Rio Rancho Public Schools are dedicated to training the next generations of the skilled trades workforce. There is a huge need in all skilled trades industries, and this partnership and facility are big steps toward helping close that gap.”

For Curtis Garand, a CNM electric vehicle instructor and Program Director of Transportation Technology, the groundbreaking marks a new chapter in student success.

“What excites me most about the new Rio Rancho facility is that it’s more than just walls and a floor—it’s a launchpad for students to pursue anything they dream of in the world of transportation,” Garand says. “This facility is home to New Mexico’s first electric vehicle program and is supported by dedicated faculty and staff who are committed to helping students break down barriers and succeed. From online and industry-based training to hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment and work-based learning at local shops and dealerships, the Rio Rancho campus offers students the tools and support they need to thrive.”
