National Hispanic Heritage Month is in full swing in the Verona Area School District (VASD).
VASD held its third annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at the Verona Area High School on Sunday, Sept. 23. The event was complete with live music, folkloric dancing, food trucks and family activities.
National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed each year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, a 30-day period where people across the country celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens with ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. According to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Latinx students made up around 21% of VASD’s 2022-23 student population.
Community partners for the 2024 Hispanic Heritage event included the Fitchburg Police Department, Madison Area Technical College, Wisconsin Latino Chamber of Commerce and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Hua Lab. Colombian singer-songwriter Angela Puerta performed alongside percussionist Johan Galindo, while Carlos and Sonia Ávila shared folkloric dancing.
