Victoria Arevalo was introduced to the world of Ballet folklórico three years ago by her mother. Ballet folklórico is a traditional folk dance from Mexico that features cultural clothing and choreographed dances. “I feel like it was a fun opportunity to try a new hobby and connect with my culture,” Victoria says. The general business major says dancing was challenging at first. “Once you actually get it down, it’s thrilling in a way,” Victoria says. Ballet folklórico places a strong emphasis on Hispanic culture, the Beaumont junior says. “The teacher will explain where the dances originate, like the regions they come from,” she says. Different regions have different costumes and dances, such as the Jalisco style. “I would say it’s also my favorite, because I really like how colorful it is,” she says. “It’s really fun, and you get to show a part of yourself to the audience.” The significance of Ballet folklórico is community and self-expression. “I think for a lot of creative people, performing can be an outlet or a way to get out there,” Victoria says.
