MEDIA, PA — In a ceremony held Wednesday at the Upper Darby Municipal Building, Dr. Marta Yera Cronin, President of Delaware County Community College (DCCC), was recognized by Mayor Ed Brown and the Upper Darby Township Council as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. This acknowledgment highlights Dr. Cronin’s significant contributions to advancing education and accessibility for diverse communities.

Dr. Cronin, a trailblazer in her own right as the first Latina and second woman to lead DCCC, was celebrated alongside Pastor Nolberto Guerra Chacón and Marisabel Isel. These individuals were lauded for their dedicated service to the Hispanic community in Upper Darby. Dr. Cronin’s leadership has been pivotal since her tenure began in 2023, focusing on expanding educational opportunities in eastern Delaware County and Chester County.

Reflecting on the honor, Dr. Cronin remarked, “It was quite an honor to be recognized with such hard-working, community-focused Hispanic Americans as Pastor Nolberto Guerra Chacón and Marisabel Isel.” Her leadership is currently steering the transformation of the former Archbishop Prendergast High School into a state-of-the-art Southeast Center in Upper Darby Township. This initiative is poised to deliver accessible, career-oriented education, with programs in high-demand fields like nursing, early childhood education, skilled trades, and culinary arts. The center will also offer essential community services, such as English as a Second Language classes, meeting spaces, and childcare services, in collaboration with the YMCA.

Dr. Cronin emphasized the college’s enduring commitment, stating, “For many years, the College has played a significant role in offering Upper Darby residents affordable, accessible education and training that leads to family-sustaining-wage careers.” She affirmed that the forthcoming Southeast Center will further enhance educational and vocational training opportunities, tailored to meet the evolving needs of Delaware County’s residents, businesses, and industries.

This recognition during Hispanic Heritage Month not only celebrates Dr. Cronin’s leadership but also highlights the pivotal role education plays in empowering communities and fostering economic development. As DCCC advances with its expansion plans, it continues to serve as a vital pillar for educational excellence and community support in Delaware County.
