LOS ANGELES- Delta Air Lines (DL) flight from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) to Tokyo Haneda (HND) diverted to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on May 28, 2025, amid technical issues with one of the engines.
The Atlanta-based carrier operates a daily flight between Detroit and Tokyo, Japan, with Airbus A350.
Delta Detroit to Tokyo Flight Diverted
The long-haul service, designated DL275, safely landed at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after an in-flight issue involving the aircraft’s anti-ice system, Aviation Herald reported.
The aircraft, identified as registration N508DN, was cruising at FL380 approximately 620 nautical miles southwest of Anchorage (ANC) when the flight crew made the decision to reroute to LAX. The issue reportedly involved the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engine’s anti-ice systems.
Flight DL275 had been en route from Detroit (DTW) to Tokyo (HND) on a regularly scheduled trans-Pacific route when the crew encountered a technical issue.
The problem, as communicated to passengers, involved the engine’s anti-ice systems—a critical component for high-altitude operations, particularly over colder regions.
Rather than continue across the Pacific Ocean, the pilots chose to divert to Los Angeles (LAX), a major Delta hub with maintenance capabilities.
The aircraft touched down safely on Runway 06R approximately 5.5 hours after the diversion decision was made. No injuries were reported.
Following the safe landing, Delta Air Lines (DL) cancelled the remainder of the flight. Affected passengers were rebooked on alternative flights to their final destination, Tokyo Haneda (HND).
The aircraft remained grounded in Los Angeles for around 18.5 hours before returning to operational status.
