Two businesses sued over a 2022 Las Vegas highway crash that killed a Las Vegas police detective have reached settlement agreements.

That’s according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

A large beam fell onto U.S. 95 and crushed a vehicle near the 215 Beltway. Las Vegas police Detective Justin Terry was driving the car and died at the scene.

A truck carrying a backhoe loader hit the low-hanging beam. Terry’s family sued Western States Contracting, D.H. Charles Engineering and Las Vegas Paving.

Engineering firm D.H. Charles agreed to pay more than $4.5 million to the family.

Western States Contracting also reached a partial settlement with the family.

A civil trial in the lawsuit is still scheduled for later this month.

The board of directors of 18b, the Las Vegas Arts District neighborhood association, has voted to oppose the proposed Las Vegas Arts District Business Improvement District, or BID, as it is currently written.

According to a post on social media, 18b says the plan falls short for the artists, small businesses and residents who built the district.

A petition was first launched in September to create a BID between Bonneville Avenue and West Wyoming Avenue. It would invest in five major areas, including public safety and economic development.

The petition will advance once property owners representing at least 50% of the district’s total assessed value sign it.

After that, the Las Vegas City Council will hold a public hearing to determine whether the BID benefits the public it serves.

Future development in the city of Las Vegas may include less parking because of proposed changes to city code.

The amendment, introduced during Wednesday’s Las Vegas City Council meeting, would implement a general 15% cap over the minimum number of parking spaces a building can have, regardless of zoning.

Additionally, the amendment reduces many other zone-specific parking minimums.

The number of spaces required per square foot for almost all amended use types is being decreased, with few exceptions, such as video arcades. Other methods of determining minimum parking needs, such as spaces required in relation to the number of commercial tennis courts, were also reduced.

According to the Las Vegas 2050 Master Plan, the city views parking spaces as expensive, both in the area they occupy and in their monetary cost.

Allegiant Stadium will open its doors to voters on Election Day.

It’s the second time the stadium will serve as a so-called polling super site. In 2024, the venue welcomed more than 4,000 voters and was the most-used polling site in the state.

As an added incentive, voters who cast their ballots at Allegiant Stadium will receive a limited-edition “I Voted at Allegiant Stadium” sticker.

The midterm election is Nov. 3, and early voting begins Oct. 17.

The UNLV Lady Rebels women’s basketball team has claimed the No. 1 spot in the Mountain West preseason poll for the 2026-27 season.

It’s the fifth year in a row the team has been picked to finish the season first.

This is also coach Lindy La Rocque’s seventh season with the Lady Rebels. She holds an overall record of 128-30.

Redshirt junior forward Meadow Roland was named Preseason Player of the Year in the same poll.

The regular season starts Monday, Nov. 2, when UNLV will play USC in the Hall of Fame Las Vegas series at T-Mobile Arena.
