An early-morning shooting in downtown Phoenix left four people injured and temporarily shut down portions of the Valley Metro light rail system on Dec. 28, though service later resumed, officials said.

Valley Metro announced that westbound A Line service was suspended at the Third Street/Washington and Downtown Hub–Washington stations because of the investigation, according to a post on X.

As of 9 a.m., westbound trains were rerouted to serve downtown Phoenix using the eastbound platforms at Third Street/Jefferson and Downtown Hub–Jefferson, Valley Metro said.

At 11:15 a.m., the A line westbound reopened along with the affected platforms, according to Juliana Vasquez-Keating, Valley Metro spokesperson.

She said light rail service to downtown Phoenix was delayed for six and a half hours, from the first ride at 4:30 a.m., until 11 a.m. when police concluded their investigation in the area.

Vasquez-Keating did not provide an estimate on how many riders were affected by the delay.

The delay started after officers responded at about 2:25 a.m. to the area of First and Washington streets after reports of a shooting, according to Sgt. Rob Scherer, a Phoenix police spokesperson.

When officers arrived, they found multiple victims with injuries, Scherer said.

Four adults were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, police said. Three adult women suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while one adult man sustained life-threatening injuries.

Police did not say if they were looking for a suspect, and declined to share further details on the shooting.
