Mayor Daniel Bovey has proclaimed May 4–8, 2026 as Economic Development Week in West Chicago, recognizing the partnerships, initiatives, and investments that support local businesses and strengthen the community’s economic future.
As part of this recognition, the City is highlighting progress made under the 2026–2028 Economic Development Work Plan, which was approved by City Council on November 3, 2025. The Work Plan establishes a clear framework to guide efforts focused on revitalizing downtown, supporting business growth, enhancing communication, and strengthening community identity.
Building Momentum in 2026
During the first quarter of 2026, the City has focused on laying the groundwork for long-term economic success while advancing key initiatives across multiple areas.

Efforts to revitalize the downtown continue, with staff engaged in discussions with multiple developers on potential mixed-use and townhouse projects. Discussions are continuing for the West Washington Street redevelopment site, while zoning updates and expanded permitted uses are being explored to support new investment and a broader mix of businesses downtown. Interest from property owners in programs supporting downtown investment further reflects growing momentum.
At the same time, the City is actively working to support local businesses and foster an environment where investment is supported through clear processes, predictable requirements, and modernized regulations. Programs designed to assist retailers and property owners remain a key tool, and regular meetings with downtown stakeholders provide an opportunity to share updates, coordinate efforts, and gather feedback.
Activating Community Spaces

Creating vibrant, welcoming spaces is another important part of economic development. This summer, the City will launch the Mosaic Market, a weekly event designed to bring residents and visitors together through food, shopping, and entertainment.
In addition, expanded cultural programming and community events, including upcoming parades and seasonal activities, continue to celebrate West Chicago’s diversity and strengthen its identity as a place where culture and commerce intersect.
Improving Communication and Access
Economic development is not only about physical investment, but also about how residents and businesses connect with the City. Work is underway to develop a new City website, improve communication tools, and expand multilingual outreach.
The recent hiring of a Business Support Specialist will further enhance the City’s ability to strengthen communication with the business community, provide resources, and support growth.
Investing in the Future

Infrastructure improvements remain a critical component of economic development. Projects are underway to strengthen key industrial corridors, while the City continues to coordinate with developers and property owners and leverage tools and partnerships that support investment and redevelopment.
The City has also begun reviewing its business regulations to ensure they are clear, modern, and aligned with evolving business practices and emerging industries.
Looking Ahead
While many initiatives are still in early stages, the first quarter of 2026 reflects steady progress and a strong foundation for the years ahead. As implementation continues, the City remains focused on supporting business retention and expansion, attracting new investment, and enhancing quality of life for residents.
