PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown field hockey team (2-1, 0-0 Ivy League) defeated Boston University (2-3, 0-0 Patriot League) in a shootout on Friday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.
Brown trailed 4-2 with 13:40 remaining in the fourth quarter, but were able to tie the game with goals from Sophia Clark and Kate Siedem to force overtime and inevitably a shootout. The Bears went on to win 3-2 in the shootout, behind goals from Kiersten Smith, Julia Lattuada, and Mia Karine Myklebust, Myklebust’s goal was the game-winning goal.
Grace Almedia, Smith, Siedem, and Clark all scored for Brown, Ellie Parker matched a career-high with 10 saves, the sophomore has 23 saves through the first three contests of the season.
In a scoreless first quarter, the Terriers outshot the Bears 4-1, Parker made two saves in the frame.
The Terriers opened the scoring 1:54 into the second quarter on a goal from Alex Purcell, they doubled their lead a few minutes later on a goal from Nicole Lauro. Almeida cut the Terriers’ lead to 2-1, before Smith knotted the game at two 1:51 later. Parker made four saves in the second quarter as the game headed to halftime tied at two.
The Terriers regained their lead 6:22 into the second half on a goal from Lucy Johnson, they would take a 3-2 advantage into the fourth quarter as they outshot the Bears 12-3 in the frame.
Boston University extended its lead to 4-2 on a goal by Molly Driscoll 1:20 into the fourth quarter. Clark cut the Terriers’ lead to 4-3 before Siedem’s second penalty stroke goal of the season tied the game at four 59 seconds later.
The game headed to overtime tied at four, Parker had 10 saves through the four quarters. With neither side able to find the back of the net in overtime as the game headed to a shootout, where the Bears would claim its second victory in a row.
Brown will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 16 when it travels to Fairfield at 1 p.m.
