LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – After a few years of research and community feedback, the City of Charlotte is now welcoming marijuana dispensaries. This Monday, the City of Charlotte will see it’s first cannabis provisioning center open it’s doors.

The city has been considering the possibility for a couple of years, which has not been without controversy. Approved by local government last August, there is more than one marijuana store coming to the area in the near future.

Mayor Pro-Tem of Charlotte Mike Duweck, says they learned from other areas with the shops in Michigan.

“Obviously some folks in town, have concerns about what kind of traffic that these centers will bring to town. Our police chief has done a great deal of research contacting cities around the state, to see what their experiences have been. The fact of the matter is, there have been virtually no problems,” said Duweck.

The city will not allow marijuana grow facilities, but they’ve had three provisioning centers apply to open up shop so far. One of those three is Hollywood Jacks, owned locally by a Charlotte native couple, with the goal of opening this summer.

“You know, it’s exciting. It’s definitely been something that I’ve had to grow into, breaking the stigma. I like many, had to educate myself in order to get on board,” said Keisha Howe, the Co-Owner Hollywood Jacks.

“We are just so excited, we are the first one to open here in Eaton county and the city of Charlotte. The whole community has just given us great support, especially on social media,” said Mitchell Maltz, the General Manager of Harbor Farmz.

For the City of Charlotte, Duweck says there’s few choices for local governments to increase their funding. He looks forward to the increased revenue from the provisioning center’s sales and property taxes.

“We’re looking right now, based on last years numbers, each center would provide about 65,000 dollars per year, to the city, for a town our size, that’s a fair amount of money,” said Duweck.

High Society is the third facility to apply for a license in Charlotte.
