Birdhouse Books and Gifts

The store offers a diverse selection of middle grade and young adult fiction, graphic novels and general fiction, as well as a notable collection of LGBTQ+ titles. Book stands highlight works by local authors and one shelf includes a “banned books” section.

Mochinut

A combination of American and Japanese cuisine, a new Mochinut location in north Austin features uniquely star-shaped donuts made from rice flour. The Mochinut menu also includes boba and other Asian-inspired beverages, as well as soft serve ice cream.

Aburi Oshi Sushi

A new to-go concept, Aburi Oshi Sushi, is now offering a new takeaway menu in Austin. The menu has flame-seared and pressed sushi, as well as classic rolls. Aburi Oshi is the first United States venture for the Aburi Restaurants group, which has concepts in Japan and Canada. Sushi is offered through the CloudKitchens ghost kitchen company for pickup, delivery or catering service daily from 11 a.m.-9 p.m.

Teddy’s

A new Southwestern-inspired eatery and bar Teddy’s will feature 80 seats split between an indoor space and an enclosed, temperature-controlled patio open year-round. The new restaurant was developed by chef and owner Daniel Berg and operating partner Dylan Salisbury, the pair behind Bill’s Oyster.

Relocations

Texas Thrift

Originally located in the Capital Plaza, the business recently moved to a new location in north Austin, along US 183. The business sells used clothing, furniture, accessories and houseware.

In the news

Central Market

The grocer celebrated its 30th anniversary in September, marking the milestone by breaking the Guinness World Record for largest charcuterie board to be created and consumed. The 12- by 24-foot charcuterie board featured 1,000 pounds of artisanal meats and cheeses, accompanied by crackers, fruits, nuts and more. The event took place at the very first Central Market location in Austin on North Lamar, which opened in 1994.

Art Realm Tattoo

The tattoo studio and fine art gallery is celebrating 10 years in business this November. The studio is owned by Andrew Matela and Nick Baxter, who are artists that specialize in realism and various styles of illustrative tattooing. The studio also has several regular rotating guest artists. Art Realm is now offering piercing services from Tara Baxter for ages five and older.
