Hortensia Rodriguez, director of the diocesan Office of Hispanic Ministry, said Hispanic couples were invited to enjoy their marriage by living God’s plan during a two-day retreat Feb. 8-9 at the Center for Pastoral Leadership in Wickliffe.
Sixty-two people participated in the program. They received training, heard from speakers and acquired the tools necessary to enrich and enjoy their marriages. The days were filled with music, speakers, exercises and prayer. Father Michael Stalla, coordinator of formation for Borromeo Seminary and a former missionary at the diocesan mission in El Salvador, celebrated the closing liturgy in Spanish on Feb. 9.

Retreat participants received a certificate recognizing their attendance at the event, which was scheduled during National Marriage Week, observed Feb. 7-14 — the week of Valentine’s Day — this year. The week, sanctioned by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, provides an opportunity to focus on building a culture of life and love that begins with supporting and promoting marriage and the family. This year’s theme is “Marriage: Source of Hope, Spring of Renewal. Pursue a Lasting Love.” In addition, World Marriage Day was observed on Feb. 9.
Juan Valdez and his wife Alba Iris Valdez, were guest speakers. They are well-known presenters at workshops, retreats and conferences for couples and families. The Valdezes have three children.
Rodriguez said the office has two couples’ retreats each year.
In addition, “Talleres en Espiritualidad Ignaciana,” workshop on Ignatian Spirituality, will be offered at 6 p.m. Feb. 27 in the Chapel of St. Mary of the Assumption at Saint Ignatius High School. Presented in Spanish, the workshop is facilitated by Spanish-speaking Jesuits who are studying in the United States. There will be a brief talk, time for individual prayer, small-group sharing and closing prayer. All are welcome to attend.
