Chron bought three staples Wednesday from five major grocery stores: ground beef, milk and white bread. The goal was to compare the same kind of everyday items at Aldi, Walmart, Kroger, H-E-B and Joe V’s Smart Shop while prioritizing recognizable staples when possible, including Borden milk, Mrs Baird’s bread and 80/20 ground beef.
Aldi had the cheapest checkout in Chron’s five-store grocery test, but Joe V’s made the value question a little more complicated.
The short answer: Aldi won on receipt total.
The Aldi run came out to $10.32 for ground beef, milk and bread. Walmart followed at $11.46, Joe V’s came in at $12.31, H-E-B totaled $13.59 and Kroger was the most expensive of the five at $15.27.
The basket was not perfectly identical at every stop. Milk sizes and brands varied, and some beef options were not exact matches. But the check gives a useful snapshot of what shoppers can run into when trying to buy the same basic meal-starter items across Houston-area grocery stores.
Here is how the receipts broke down:
Aldi’s edge came from the cheapest milk and beef combination in the test. Walmart was close behind, but its milk purchase was a half-gallon, which makes the total look lower than a full milk-to-milk comparison.
Joe V’s was not the cheapest overall, but it had the cheapest bread in the test and a competitive beef price. It also landed nearly $3 cheaper than Kroger for the same basic basket.
H-E-B landed in the middle, with the second-cheapest bread and a lower total than Kroger. Kroger had the highest total, driven mostly by the $4.99 milk and $7.29 ground beef.
The biggest takeaway is not that one store will always win every trip. Prices move, sales change and shoppers may care more about brand, package size or location than saving a dollar or two.
But for this small basket, Aldi was the cheapest stop. Joe V’s was the better “do not sleep on it” option.
