As we approach the Fourth of July, it’s time to start planning celebrations and, of course, keeping an eye on the weather. Whether you’re heading to the Boston Esplanade for the fireworks or celebrating elsewhere, here’s what you can expect in terms of weather, humidity, and the chance of thunderstorms.
Wednesday continues the trend with dry conditions and seasonably warm temperatures reaching the low 80s. Expect lots of sunshine, low humidity and a light southwest breeze. The humidity will slowly rise Wednesday night, but is low enough still that you can get away with leaving the windows open to let the fresh air in. Cities and towns with fireworks celebrations on the third will have dry weather, partly cloudy skies and temperatures fall through the 70s into the 60s by late evening.
On Independence Day, a weakening disturbance will approach from the west, bringing the risk for showers and thunderstorms. It will by no means be a wash-out. In fact, a few showers will be possible in the morning following by the chance of a pop-up thunderstorm generally noon to 8pm. After the sun sets, any leftover activity will diminish.
Fortunately, this means that by the time the fireworks kick off on the Esplanade, we should be rain and storm-free, though it will be humid.
Daytime
- Temperature: Expect a warm day with high temperatures reaching the mid 80s.
- Humidity: Humidity levels will be moderate to high, making it feel warmer than the actual temperature.
- Conditions: Partly to mostly cloudy. South-southwest wind 5-15 mph.
- Precipitation: There’s a 30% chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon, primarily due to the warmth and humidity.
Evening (Fireworks Time)
- Temperature: The thermometer should cool slightly to around 75°F by the time the fireworks start.
- Humidity: Dew points will remain high, in the mid to upper 60s, making it feel muggy.
- Precipitation: The chance of thunderstorms decreases to about 10-20% in the evening, especially after 8PM. Any thunderstorms that do develop are expected to be brief and localized.
Given the expected warm temperatures and high humidity, it’s important to stay hydrated and wear lightweight, breathable clothing if you’re heading out for the day. If you plan to enjoy the fireworks at the Esplanade, it’s always a good idea to arrive early to secure a good spot. Be prepared for the muggy conditions by bringing plenty of water and perhaps a handheld fan to stay cool.
While the chance of thunderstorms is low, it’s still wise to be prepared. Monitor weather updates throughout the day, especially in the afternoon when the chance of storms is slightly higher. Use weather apps for the latest information.

After the Fourth
Expect a warm and humid Friday with the potential for pop-up showers. As we head into the weekend, the weather pattern becomes more unsettled. While timing remains uncertain, showers and thunderstorms are likely at times. The atmosphere will be moisture-rich, leading to localized downpours.
Both Saturday and Sunday will be warm and muggy, with highs in the middle to upper 80s and dew points in the low 70s, making the humidity quite oppressive.
