SAN ANTONIO – A planned federal detention facility in San Antonio is gaining ground.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) awarded a $17.3 million contract on Aug. 27 for the redevelopment of an East Side warehouse into a detention center, federal contract records show. GardaWorld Federal Services LLC, a division of Canadian private security company GardaWorld Corp., won the job.

“This task order is to procure the renovation of existing, ICE-owned permanent structure in San Antonio, TX to serve as a processing and detention facility and provide all necessary wraparound services for operation of the facility,” the award description said.

ICE acquired the warehouse in February for $66.1 million, the Business Journal previously reported, in a move that sparked pushback from East Side and city leaders. The property, developed by Oakmont Industrial Group, encompasses 639,595 square feet.
