Central Iowa festivals brace for rain as organizers say safety comes first in Ankeny and Des Moines
DES MOINES, Iowa —
Organizers of two central Iowa festivals say their events will continue despite expected rain, as long as the weather does not threaten public safety.
“We have leaned into a few of the traditions,” said Mindy Toyne, organizer of Oktoberfest at The District at Prairie Trail in Ankeny.
Toyne said organizers are prepared to make the most of the wet weather.
“We brought back the fun contest, the wet beer gut competition. Mother Nature brought the liquid for that,” Toyne said. “We are having some rain attire prizes.”
Toyne said tents will provide plenty of space for people who want to stay dry.
Oktoberfest will continue unless lightning or other dangerous conditions put attendees at risk.
“Safety is always our first and foremost priority, so we evacuate the park if people’s well-being is in danger,” she said.
The Latino Heritage Festival at Western Gateway Park also has an emergency plan.
Executive Director Joe Gonzalez said organizers would make an announcement from the stage and move throughout the festival grounds to direct people to shelter, including the nearby Nationwide parking ramp, if lightning develops.
Otherwise, Gonzalez said the festival will go on as scheduled.
“We will carry on rain or shine,” he said. “Hope that people still brave the weather. Bring your umbrella, your rain boots and everything.”
