49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk went from being one of the premier pass catchers in the NFL to possibly being out of the league in just the span of a couple of years.
The 2023 All-Pro selection hasn’t played since Oct. 20 of the 2024 NFL season, and as confirmed by John Lynch shortly after the draft, he won’t be returning to San Francisco. While the 49ers could just release Aiyuk and end the saga, they have made it clear they want to receive some sort of trade compensation instead.
Naturally, reuniting with his college quarterback, Jayden Daniels, on the Washington Commanders has been a popular suggestion. However, when Daniels was asked by the media about Aiyuk on Wednesday at the team’s OTA, he didn’t have much insight into the situation.
“Um, I don’t know. I don’t have a sense of it,” Daniels stated. “That is my brother, we have a personal relationship…but his football future is out of my control.”
After suffering a major knee injury during the 2024 season, Aiyuk has been relatively off the grid. So much so that his frequent skipping of rehab sessions with the 49ers led to San Francisco voiding his future guaranteed money.
It’s unclear how dedicated or serious he is about returning to NFL action, but it appears even his closest friend is in the dark.
